A Pasture Walk is an informal gathering of livestock
owners who are interested in the grazing aspect of
raising livestock. They are generally held onsite of a
working pasture of a local grazier. Topics for
discussion can range from Grass and Legume species
selection, to Soil Sampling and Fertility, to Fencing
and Waterline Layout, to Rotational Grazing. Topics
selected for each individual meeting are selected based
on relevant needs and issues of the host farmer and the
issues that each season of the year presents.
Discussion is generally lead by an experienced grazier,
but each individual who attends brings their own set of
knowledge and experiences to share with others. Pasture
walks are an informal environment where farmers can
gather together to learn from each other.
From April through October, the SWCD looks
for volunteers to host a pasture walk on the 3rd Tuesday
of every month. They
are held in the evening to accommodate daytime schedules
and can last for several hours. There is no cost to
anyone who would like to attend.
